The statistics of Yo-Yo dieting are not pretty and I know it’s not easy, but it’s possible to break this if you’re intentional about it! Here are 7 tips that will equip you to stay consistent.
1. Know your body
Understand that when you are in a weight loss phase, your body is primed to either gain or lose weight. Every time you yo-yo in extreme fad diets, it becomes harder to lose the next time. When you slow down your metabolism, it also affects the amount of calories you burn at rest making hard to lose the weight again.
2. Learn to win outside the Box
Learn how to eat out and win outside of a Tupperware but remember that when you are in a calorie deficit, it becomes really hard to stick to consistency with the lingering cravings that come from restaurant and fast foods; typically leading you to yo-yo week in and week out.
3. Focus on ‘failing forward’
Self-compassion when you do make poor choices is crucial, instead of allowing that to spiral you even more. You won’t be perfect, your will power will not be formidable and that is okay – the important thing is to stand back up every time you fall.
4. ‘ You are not alone..’
Utilize support system to close the gaps when you do spiral. It may be your current pattern to let on hour of poor choice turn into a couple days, even weeks. Focus on breaking the amount of time it takes you to get back up. I find that releasing this to those in your corner of accountability makes a massive difference.
5. The Scale is just a number
Utilize non-scale victories and and other tangible things like life experiences to propel your choices forward. Sometimes the focus is so rooted on the scale or temporary motivation and that is just not enough to break yo-yo dieting in the long term
6. Let the past propel you forward
Never forget where you started. I am constantly reminding clients to remember where they started, so that it will add another level of conviction for them remembering where do not want to be again.
7. Find your Deeper Why
Why you continue to spiral? Why you continuing to do what do you so desperately want to stop doing? Why you want to be healthy and shatter poor past habits.
