Battling Depression
Finding the Strength from Within
A 100 painkillers in my system. One foot off the balcony on the 31st floor. I thought to myself, this is it....
Withdrawn from the World
Depression is more than just feeling sad. Everyone feels upset or unmotivated from time to time, but depression is more serious. It is a mood disorder characterized by prolonged feelings of sadness and loss of interest in daily activities.
Sometimes, depression is triggered by a stressful event in your life, such as an illness or a job change. At other times, it can seem to come out of nowhere. Often, people who are depressed feel worthless. They have trouble concentrating and are usually unable to enjoy things. It’s common to have difficulty sleeping when you are depressed.
You can get into a vicious circle where you have low energy from your depression, are unable to sleep well, and then feel even more tired and exhausted.
My journey starts in 2007, in the best shape of my life playing professional soccer in Brazil. A year later with the death of dreams, I was 356 lbs. (+212 lbs in a year, yes you read that right). It took me a year to lose 150 lbs through extreme dieting and unsustainable methods.
From there I spiraled into 5 years of crippling addiction, self-neglect and depression that led to attempted suicide.
I began piecing my life together with the grit and determination to pull myself out of the mess that I created. I knew it would be the hardest thing I ever did.
It took me a year and a half to torch 190 lbs and I now stand 5 half years sober, living intentionally in this lifestyle change.
